Mangrove Characteristics

Mangroves

Red mangroves prop themselves up above the water level with stilt roots. These roots help to take in air through tiny openings in their bark (lenticils).Black mangroves live on higher ground, and make many aerial roots (pneumatophores). These roots stick up out of the soil like straws for breathing. Depending on the environment white mangroves develop pneumatophores and/or prop roots.
