During the week of April 11, 2021, members from the Nature Foundation St. Maarten, the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA), the Saba Conservation Foundation (SCF), and Beneath the Waves will be conducting shark research in the territorial waters of St. Maarten.

This activity is a part of a wider research project into Tiger Sharks in the region funded by WWF-NL through the Biodiversity Funds and the Dutch National Postcode Lottery.

The goal of the week-long project is to gather data on sharks in Sint Maarten and for participants to be trained in ultrasonography technology to later determine whether the Saba Bank is a breeding area for tiger sharks in the Eastern Caribbean. The week-long project will be called the ‘Shark Shakedown’.

Get to know your pollinator superheroes! 🦋

Butterflies are attracted to bright flowers and feed on nectar. When they do this their bodies collect pollen and carry it to other plants. This helps fruits, vegetables, and flowers to produce new seeds. The Gulf Fritillary or Passionfruit butterfly (𝘈𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘴 𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘦) is one of them.

Aren’t they beautiful?

Expanding HOBO Sensors in the Marine Park. 🙌

The number of light and temperature arrays we have in the Bonaire National Marine Park has been expanded! In partnership with STINAPA, Dive Friends staff put in four new arrays at Delphins, Yellow Submarine, Something Special, and Cliff. These arrays will be maintained by Dive Friends and the data shared with us.

We hope to get a better understanding of how the water temperature fluctuates in the BNMP, the effects of rain, and runoff on the amount of light available to corals. Thank you Dive Friends Bonaire 👍

Thank you Bonaire Tourism, we do it with pride.❤️𝘼 𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙛 𝙃𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙤𝙣 𝙊𝙪𝙧 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 – Stichting Nationale Parken Nederlandse Antillen (STINAPA N.A.) was founded in 1962. The objective was to have a foundation actively protecting nature on the islands of the former Netherlands Antilles.

The first activities of this foundation were concentrated on Bonaire. Efforts were made to safeguard the breeding grounds of the Caribbean Flamingos and the creation of the Washington Park in 1969. It became the first sanctuary of the Netherlands Antilles.

After that effort, negotiations began for the purchase of the Slagbaai Plantation. Enough money was raised and in 1979 the plantation was added to the park. It became the Washington Slagbaai National Park. In that same year, 1979, the Bonaire Marine Park was founded.

During the following years each island had a commission of the foundation and by the end of the 1980’s the islands turned the commissions into separate foundations. Bonaire founded Stichting Nationale Parken Bonaire (STINAPA Bonaire).

Since then, STINAPA Bonaire has been managing the protected areas of Bonaire and caring for the preservation and conservation of nature on the island.
