Unraveling the mystery of coral spawning to restore reefs

Mass spawning is one of the most elusive and rare natural wonders to witness. On just a few magical nights of the year, corals on the reef sync up and simultaneously release millions of gametes (eggs and sperm) into the water column in the hopes of seeding the reefs for the future and creating new unique coral colonies. Francesca Virdis, Coordinator of Reef Renewal Bonaire, describes what is known about coral reproduction and the steps involved with restoring coral populations through the innovative technique of larval propagation.
